Amica: A Century of Service 1907-2007

In 1907, America was on the verge of great change. The United States then consisted primarily of farms and small towns, while horses and coal-fed locomotives remained the chief modes of transportation, despite the invention of the automobile. Adolph Thomas Vigneron, however, anticipated that automobiles would become an inevitable part of the country’s future, and in one small room, he founded the Automobile Mutual Insurance Company of America (Amica) in Providence, Rhode Island. Vigneron, an inventor and businessman, envisioned Amica as a mutual company, owned by policyholders instead of stockholders. He introduced the concept of preferred risk underwriting to the nascent field of car insurance, forgoing “soliciting agents” to rely exclusively on personal referrals from existing policyholders. From those humble beginnings, Amica has expanded to include services such as home, condominium, and renters insurance, as well as life insurance and retirement planning. With 38 branches in 27 states, the company continues to maintain its strict values and to provide outstanding customer service to its policyholders, always paying claims “promptly and liberally.” From employing two clerks in 1907, Amica has grown to include a staff of more than 3,000 associates nationwide, with an average tenure of more than a decade. Amica’s employees contribute to a corporate culture frequently referred to as the “Amica Family,” helping the company maintain its leadership position within the industry. Although Amica has never strived to be the biggest insurance company in the country, it prides itself on being the best. In Amica: A Century of Service 1907-2007, discover the remarkable people andevents that have guided this unique company during its first century.

My husband Ted and I were married in Owen Sound, Ontario in June of 1975. Two months later we had everything we owned packed, and were on our way to British Columbia. Having spent much of my youth as the daughter of missionarys living in remote areas of Northern British Columbia and at times in Ontario, returning to British Columbia would be a welcome homecoming for me. In the years since I had left this amazingly beautiful country I had never lost my yearning to return to it. Ted on the other hand, was born and raised in Ontario, and had never been to British Columbia. As an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman, he could hardly wait. Although having been raised in a fairly large town, we had no fear that Ted would have any trouble adjusting to the lifestyle we had chosen for our future. Our intentions were to head as far North in British Columbia as we could make it before our funds ran out, then, we would settle down and start our new life together. Due to a car accident and the Insurance Company of British Columbia being on strike, Kamloops, a thriving cattle town in British Columbia’s interior was as far as we were able to go. We were devastated with this turn of events and had no choice but to make the best of our situation. Needing work, Ted took many jobs over the next few years to make ends meet. These jobs included working in a sporting goods distributorship, the peat moss bogs of Alberta, the oil rigs in Northern Alberta and a plywood plant in central British Columbia. I took many small Jobs during this time to help meet expenses and to try and save some money. Not once during this time did our dreams of moving north fade. Now, five and a half years, twoprovinces, and many small towns later, we were once again ready to head North. This time we had a destination in mind. Atlin, the last utopia, the Switzerland of the north would be our home for the next nine years. This is the story of two green horns with a dream. The story of a

The vintage postcards in this collection feature the delights and difficulties of Bloomington-Normal at the turn-of-the-century. These images capture historic events such as the Street Car Strike of 1917 in which workers took their demands to the streets. The businesses that closed-up shop years ago are opened again through these historic postcards, many of which were originally produced by Bloomington-based postcard publisher C.U. Williams.

Excerpt: Carol Stream is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. Incorporated on January 5, 1959, and named after the developer’s daughter, Carol Stream had a population of 40,438 as of the 2000 U.S. census. A common misconception is that the municipality of Carol Stream was named for a local minor waterway (There are several in the community. The largest is Klein Creek). In fact, Carol Stream may be the only community in America which took its name from the first and last names of a living person: Carol Stream, the daughter of its founder Jay Stream. Jay W. Stream (April 17, 1921 January 26, 2006), a military veteran who had previously sold insurance and ready-mix concrete, was in the mid-1950s heading Durable Construction Company. He became frustrated with red tape while negotiating a planned 350-400 home subdivision in nearby Naperville, Illinois. A Naperville clerk reportedly advised Stream to “build your own town”, and in 1957, Stream began buying unincorporated farmland outside Wheaton. As construction progressed, Stream’s daughter Carol, then 14, was nearly killed in an automobile accident in Kenosha County, Wisconsin, not far from where the Stream’s summer home was located in Twin Lakes. On Monday August 26, 1957, Carol and three friends were returning from Racine, Wisconsin in a 1949 Studebaker. While attempting to cross U.S. Route 45 in central Kenosha County, the car was struck in the right rear corner, killing 15-year-old Richard Christie of Chicago, the passenger seated there. Carol was ejected through the windshield and into a utility pole. Neurosurgeons at Kenosha Memorial Hospital said the comatose girl might never awaken or, if she did, would likely be severely handicapped. On advice of the doctors that h… More:

Warren Buffet, owner of GEICO parent Berkshire Hathaway, has stated that over 40% of Americans could save money with GEICO. He has indicated that he would spend $2 billion on GEICO ads if he could, far exceeding the $751 million in advertising in 2007, the last year where data was available. As part of the early GEICO Direct ads and the “Dumb Things” campaign, those 15 second long commercials were animated by Bill Plympton, and feature a curious little man walking up to an object and end up getting hurt after being curious about the object (for example, he encounters a cannon, presses a button, and a ball fires and sticks to his face). GEICO has presented a number of memorable one shot ads. Amongst these are: The company’s ads sometimes focus on its reptilian mascot, Martin the Gecko, an anthropomorphic Day Gecko created by The Martin Agency and most recently a CGI creature generated by Framestore CFC. The gecko first appeared in 1999 during the Screen Actors Guild strike that prevented the use of live actors. In the original commercial, where the gecko pleads for people to stop calling him in error, mistaking gecko for GEICO, he was voiced by Kelsey Grammer. Western Coastal Insurance (“WCI”), an affluent and prominent California liability insurance company, is enjoying a tide of prestige and profits generated from manipulated public and judicial opinion. Then, on a LA crosswalk adjacent to a hotel building site, a blue sedan crashes into construction worker Tony Alvarez. The driver of the car is a claims agent for WCI. With Tony left a paraplegic from the crash and unable to support his young family, he and his wife, Anna Lisa, find themselves in the fight of their lives for both their marriage and their family’s future. When WCI employs its vast legal muscle to escape responsibility, Tony’s attorney Matt Macado is pitted against hardened defense attorney Simon LaFollette and LaFollette’s co-counsel, rookie defense attorney Karen Killebrew. Matt knew of WCI’s “scorched earth” policy in dealing with claims, but is not prepared for the fiery battle that ensues.Facing a culture of corruption and greed willing to protect itself at any cost, Matt and Karen find themselves first adversaries, then allies, as they put their careers and their lives at risk to battle the beast behind the fabricated image of WCI.”John Cotton has written a great legal thriller in the best tradition of John Grisham and Scott Turow. Image of the Beast is well thought-out and researched. The behind-the-scenes machinations of the civil legal system are fascinating and presented in a way that is easy to read and understand. Image of the Beast is a real page turner – I couldn’t put it down.” Chris Yurko, Editor Author John Cotton holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of Wyoming, and is currently in private practice.
